Social media in recruitment

Millions of people in England use social media every day with Facebook and Twitter being the most visited online destinations in the UK. Some experts believe that the rise in popularity to these websites is due to the increase in online recruitment.

A report by information services company, Experian Hitwise, an information services company, found that social networking sites received 2.4 billion hits from UK visitors in January 2011, meaning that social media sites are more popular than sites such as BBC iPlayer.

It is clear that candidates now look online for jobs, as social media has been found to be 6% more popular than press advertising and Google registers around 79,000,000 results for 'Recruitment' and 162,000 for 'Social Media Recruitment', which is why we introduced social media as a recruitment method at Integra People.

Traditionally recruiting online has been done by posting on job websites or job boards, but we have increased our methods to reach more candidates, therefore improving the services we provide to our clients.

There are many benefits to using social media in recruitment, as social media posts are seen by passive candidates who aren't using job boards and actively looking for jobs, but if the right opportunity came along they might be tempted as it is reaching a wider audience than traditional recruitment methods.

Recruiting by social media can also save time as job posts can be seen immediately by candidates which increases the efficiency of our team, meaning we can place more candidates in roles for our clients.

There are several advantages to using social media, but businesses need to be cautious whenever using the sites, as there is a risk of social exclusion. We understand that not everybody uses social media which is why we combine it with other methods such as sending job posts via SMS messages in order to reach a wide range of people.

It is clear that the use of social media in recruitment is popular and will continue to grow as the popularity and the number of social media sites increase. We think it is a crucial part of our business strategy to use social media but we implement it with a mix of other techniques to ensure that we get a wide range of clients applying for each post so we can provide our clients with the best suited candidates for the job.
