CV Tips

This is the first impression a prospective employer will have of you, and is a great opportunity to sell yourself, your ambitions and achievements, and prospects.

Clearly highlight the relevant skills you have that are a requirement for the job, and include anything that shows how diverse, interested and skilled you are.

Take the time to proofread your CV and ensure that you have used the correct spelling and grammar, and that it is concise yet up to date.

Avoid sending the same CV for every job, as every role is different and if you want to stand out from the crowd, making your CV personable and relevant is key.

For all of our job roles, we require a CV as part of the application process. Your CV should include:

  • Your full name and contact details including your address, phone number, and email address.
  • A personal statement – this can be adapted to the specific role you are applying for and is a short statement outlining your experience and your future career plans.
  • Education and professional qualifications – include the dates you achieved them, institution, location, subjects and exam results.
  • Details of any memberships of professional bodies you belong to.
  • A list of all the skills you have been trained in.
  • List employment history and work experience. Not every role will be directly linked to the current job, however they may have transferable skills that you could apply to your new role.
  • Include your personal interests to give the employer a better idea of what type of person you are.
  • State up to date references.

Interview Tips

An interview is a nerve-wracking experience for candidates, yet it is a crucial stage in the hiring process and a huge opportunity to prove yourself capable of an exciting new role.

It is important to remain calm and positive throughout, taking time to listen to and answer each question with clarity and confidence.

We have put together some handy tips for a candidate to bear in mind prior to the interview process:

  • Begin by researching what skills of yours are needed for the job and industry that you are applying for, which will enable you to emphasise them during the interview.
  • Find out about the background of the company by looking at the company’s website and other available literature.
  • Plan your journey to ensure you arrive in good time. Set your alarm, check traffic prior to leaving, and find out about parking facilities, to avoid turning up late.
  • It is important to be well presented, and dress appropriately for the type of job you are applying for.
  • Prepare some questions to ask the interviewer to show that you are keen and serious about the role – “How would you describe the culture of the company?” and “Can you tell me about someone in this position who did a fantastic job, and what made it so good?” for example.
  • Rehearse interview scenarios. How well can you answer the typical interview questions below?
  • Print a copy of your CV to take with you, as well as a notebook and pen if you want to make notes.
  • At the end of the interview make sure to thank them for their time, and ask them for their follow up procedure so you know when you will hear back from them.

Typical interview questions

When going for an interview you need to be prepared for the questions they will ask you. Here are some standard interview questions that you may hear:

  • Why do you want this job?
  • What do you know about our company?
  • Why do you want to work for us?
  • Why did you choose your profession?
  • What are your strengths/weaknesses?
  • What do you like/dislike about your current job role?
  • Why are you looking for a new position?
  • What has been your greatest achievement to date?
